Community development projects

The GLAMI two-day challenge was a special undertaking that involved the coordination and implementation of small, impactful community projects designed by Kisa Scholars. Kisa is a two-year leadership course that prepares girls in their last two years of secondary school to attend university and create positive social change in their communities. 932 girls organized in 42 groups coordinated and implemented small and impactful community projects that were carried out during the two-day challenge. The girls actively took on leadership roles, proving their capabilities and their ability to think critically. Due to a change in the academic calendar, the girls completed projects that took place in their environment and immediate nearby communities rather that their home communities. At Weruweru secondary school, for example, the Scholars adressed problems regarding water hygiene and sanitation as well as the study habits of students who were not passing their division exams. At Mwika secondary school scholars joined together to focus on one project to reduce infections that many girls had been experiencing, as well as increase the longevity of clothing by replacing decaying clotheslines on the school grounds. At Machame secondary school, the girls completed a similar project to replace old clotheslines for similar health and hygiene issues. (Click here to read about all the 42 projects). After the two-day challenge, 82% of girls reported that they currently hold a leadership role in their school and/or community and more than 95% of the girls reported that they are actively working to improve their community.

Founded in 2001, AfricAid is an American organization founded in 2001. Together with its sister organization in Tanzania, GLAMI (Girls Livelihood and Mentorship Initiative), it aims to support mentoring opportunities that help secondary school girls complete their education, develop into confident leaders, and transform their own lives and their communities.
