Accelerating socio-economic development

Following Raising the Village’s (RTV) holistic model, the project aimed to increase household incomes, facilitate civic engagement and accelerate socio-economic development in ten villages from the District.  More specifically, villagers adopted improved agricultural practices at household level and improved water and sanitation practices. Other activities included diversifying household agriculture for consumption and sale, developing household assets through provision of the small livestock and training in basic financial literacy at household level. Improved access to healthcare and water were also included in the project.

Thanks to community participation and in close collaboration with the local government, RTV successfully improved household incomes and assets and addressed key development barriers. The improved agricultural practices, access to agricultural inputs to diversify household consumption and sale, development of livestock assets, as well as financial literacy training and establishing VSLAs enable the increase of household earrings and income to 2.48 USD /day. Agricultural cooperatives, such as the women’s garlic group and the youth delivery cooperatives ensured that RTV’s the pass-it-on methodology was upheld. 92% of households have adopted improved agricultural practices. And 94% are complying with standardized WASH practices. To combat food insecurity resulting from COVID-19 impacts, 1’122 households received “Ready-to-Eat” kits, providing them with 196 seedlings of 12 vegetable varieties.

Raising the Village (RTV) is a Canadian charity founded in 2012. It aims to provide assistance to smallholder families in last-mile rural Ugandan villages to help them address the key barriers affecting their socio-economic development.

Uganda’s economy has continued to post strong growth, by many developing country standards. It nevertheless remains a very poor country and far from the middle-income status it aspires to. Although the poverty rate has greatly declined from 39% in 2002 to 19% in 2012, the strong population growth has meant that the absolute number of poor people has remained the same. One in three children has no food to eat during the school day and 27% of children under five are stunted. Agriculture accounts for 25% of the country’s GDP and employs 77% of the adult population. However, the productivity of smallholder farmers remains low due to lack of access to services such as credit and insurance and reliance on traditional farming methods.
