The Tsavo Trust (TT) is in charge of refurbishing the Nthunguni Dispensary infrastructure, in order to address structural deficiencies and disrepair within the maternity wing and the overall building. A small modern one-bedroom house will be constructed within the facility premises, ensuring that the resident nurse is able to respond to emergencies in a timely manner. On October 7, 2024, a groundbreaking ceremony was held, attended by representatives from the Minister of Health, Makueni County, County and national Government Officials, community members, Kamungi Conservancy leadership and Tsavo Trust officials. Construction commenced on October 15, 2024, initial work included the foundation for the nurse’s house and the expansion of the maternity wing’s washroom facilities. A perimeter fence to enhance the security of the dispensary was installed before any construction work was undertaken. Construction works for the Nurse’s house and the maternity’s bathroom, toilet and sluice room are ongoing. The next steps of the project consist of the completion of the dispensary upgrades, including the installation of a 10,000L rainwater harvesting system, installation of a solar power system to provide reliable backup power, ensuring the dispensary can deliver uninterrupted services and the procurement of modern equipment for the maternity and clinic so as to improve diagnostic and treatment capabilities. The dispensary aims to be fully operational by June 2025.
