The Vita Forestry Initiative, funded by Addax and Oryx, in the Gamo Zone, Ethiopia has made significant strides in restoring degraded forests and promoting sustainable rural livelihoods in Southern Ethiopia.
During the reporting period from April 2024 to December 2024, the initiative has achieved notable milestones. Three cooperatives, comprising 300 members (190 men and 110 women), actively participated in tree planting activities, resulting in the successful plantation of 20,250 tree seedlings across 7.94 hectares of land. Additionally, 10 local leaders were involved in the planting efforts, further emphasizing the strong community engagement.
The project also targeted 150 farmers (144 men and 6 women) for agroforestry practices, integrating trees with agricultural activities on their private lands. This approach aims to improve soil health, provide shade, and contribute to long-term economic benefits for farmers.
Capacity building has been a central focus, with one formal training conducted for cooperative leaders, local experts, and community members, involving a total of 322 participants (190 men and 110 women).
Despite challenges such as the early onset of the rainy season and competing agricultural activities, the Vita Forestry Initiative remains committed to its goals. The project continues to support existing beekeeping groups, with plans for experience-sharing events on honey processing and marketing.
The Vita Forestry Initiative's approach highlights the importance of collaboration between local communities, cooperatives, and government officials in achieving sustainable environmental practices. As the project progresses, it aims to further enhance climate-resilient livelihoods and promote sustainable forest management in Southern Ethiopia.
