Leveling the playing field for students

21 September 2023

The project led by the Tsavo Trust Kyusyani Secondary school within the Kamungi Conservancy in Southern Kenya is ten months underway. On June 5, 2023 the newly constructed and fully equipped science laboratory at Kyusyani Secondary School was officially handed over to Tsavo Trust. An official commissioning event took place an August 8, 2023 and brought together key stakeholders such as the Governor of Makueni County, the Chairman of Safaricom Foundation, Tsavo Trust's Chief Community Officer, the Deputy County Commissioner, Sub County Education Officer, some distinguished guests, teachers, parents, students, and community members.

The installation of a robust solar system and of digital literacy kits, in the computer laboratory, have significantly elevated the educational experience within the school, facilitating a seamless transition into the digital learning era. Students and teachers alike have embraced these technological tools with enthusiasm, harnessing their potential to enhance the teaching and learning process. The project has also yielded practical benefits, such as the provision of power sockets in the computer laboratory enables teachers and staff to charge electronic devices, enhancing connectivity and accessibility.

The roof water harvesting system has had a profound and immediate impact on the school's water security. The collection of over 10,000 liters of water during the upcoming October rain season, will allow for water to be diverted to a 3,000-liter storage tank located within the confines of the science laboratory. This water supply will be supporting laboratory activities through a network of taps. The surplus water of water, drained from the sinks, will irrigate the grove of 200 trees adjoining the school premises.

The provision of a state-of-the-art science laboratory has leveled the playing field for Kyusyani students during the Kenya Secondary Schools National Examinations. They now have access to the same quality resources as schools in urban areas, addressing the disparity in educational resources.
